The purpose of the grant is to support the education of women from developing countries who are committed to improving the lives of women and children in their home countries. Previous grant recipients were studying fields such as agriculture, architecture and urban planning, civil engineering, education, forestry, journalism, nursing, nutrition, pediatrics, public administration, public health, social sciences, and social work.
The MMMF will award six grants of about $11,000 in 2006; they are not renewable. Requests for application forms for the 2006-07 academic year will be accepted from September 2005 until January 31, 2006. The deadline for completed applications will be 1 February 2006. The MMMF will announce the recipients by May 1, 2006.

UNESCO invites young postgraduate researchers in developing countries with a master’s degree (or equivalent) to apply for fellowships, each worth US$6,000 to US$10,000, through the UNESCO / Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowship Program. The program offers a total of 20 fellowships to researchers active in one of four fields: the environment, inter-cultural dialogue, information and communication technology, and peaceful conflict resolution.
Eligibility
Researchers under 40 years of age may submit their applications to their country’s National Commission for UNESCO, which will select a maximum of two candidates. A special selection committee of experts in the four research fields concerned will review the applications in order to make proposals to the director-general.

Background and Objectives
The Rothamsted International African Fellows Program aims to provide problem-focused training in Europe for mid-career African scientists. The Program started in 2004.
The purpose of the program is to assist in capacity building, institutional strengthening and knowledge transfer in order to find relevant solutions to the problems of achieving sustainable agricultural production, as well as improving rural development and conservation of biodiversity.
The development of effective partnerships is fundamental to ensuring the success of the program in order to build long-term strategic alliances.
Fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis through an assessment panel and will normally be for periods of 6 months although they can vary from 4 to 12 months depending on the nature of the project.
Projects on food processing will NOT be supported, nor can the program support field work in Africa. MSc and PhD studies are outside the remit of the program

We announce the recommencement of our Graduate Scholarship Program and call for applications from qualified candidates. Funds will be available for three or four scholarship awards and successful applicants will be notified in January 2006.
The Program: The Research for Development Council of International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, Nigeria, invites outstanding students of agriculture and related sciences from sub-Saharan African countries to compete for a limited number of postgraduate scholarships. Through this initiative, which is aimed at expanding the corps of agricultural scientists in the sub-continent, IITA seeks to further strengthen the research capacity of national agricultural research systems (NARS) in sub-Saharan Africa.
Eligibility: The postgraduate scholarship program is open to nationals of sub-Saharan African countries. Candidates for an MSc scholarship must have a BSc or an equivalent degree while candidates for a PhD scholarship must have an MSc or an equivalent degree, in relevant agricultural sciences. Employees of non-governmental organizations, private sector organizations, universities as well as employees of national agricultural research institutes are encouraged to apply. IITA is an equal opportunity employer and particularly welcomes applications from women candidates.
Duration: MSc scholarship – 2 years; PhD scholarship – 3 years.

The UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Program for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) invites applications for the award of research training grants from individuals who are nationals of, and employed in, least-developed disease endemic countries (LDC) and developing disease endemic countries (DEC) with lesser developed research capacities. These grants are awarded on a competitive basis for studies leading to a postgraduate degree, or for acquiring specialized skills.
Studies must be on one or more of the TDR target diseases – malaria, leishmaniasis, schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis, African trypanosomiasis and Chagas disease, leprosy, dengue and tuberculosis, in laboratory, clinical, applied field research and social sciences disciplines, relevant to TDR and/or national priorities. The IAS-STS in Graz, Austria, promotes the interdisciplinary investigation of the links and interactions between science, technology and society, technology assessment, as well as research on the development and implementation of socially and environmentally sound technologies.

The Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program

The cornerstone of the Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program (Borlaug Fellows Program) is faculty and scientist exchange programs with developing countries. The program provides short-term scientific training for international agricultural research scientists and policymakers from selected developing countries. Each Fellow is assigned a mentor who will coordinate the Fellow’s training and visit the Fellow’s host country after completion of the training. Training venues include U.S. land grant universities, USDA or other government agencies, private companies, not-for-profit institutions and international agricultural research centers.
Geographic Coverage
The program is open to participants from developing and middle income countries. At this time, the priority regions of coverage are Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia, with active programs in Afghanistan, Algeria, Armenia, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Central America, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Guyana, Morocco, Oman, Peru, the Philippines, Romania, Serbia-Montenegro, Tunisia, Vietnam, West Africa, and Yemen.
Purpose
The purpose of the Borlaug Fellows Program is to help countries strengthen their agricultural practices through the transfer of new science and agricultural technologies. The program encompasses a wide variety of agricultural technologies, including those related to production, processing and marketing. The program also addresses obstacles to the adoption of technology, such as ineffectual policies and regulations. Areas of training can be in any agriculture-related field, and include traditional areas such as agronomy, plant pathology, entomology, veterinary sciences, microbiology, agricultural economics, but also may include food safety, sanitary and phytosanitary topics, environmental sciences, agricultural biotechnology, global climate change, water quality and management, among others.

The IFS Research Grant
An IFS Research Grant has a maximum value of USD 12,000. It is awarded to an individual researcher, for a specific research project, presented by the Applicant in the Application form. The IFS Research Grant is intended for the purchase of the basic tools needed to conduct the proposed research project – equipment, expendable supplies, and literature – and to arrange fieldwork activities related to the proposed project. The grant cannot be used to pay for the aspiring Grantee’s own salary or for honoraria, or to cover tuition fees or living expenses. It is expected that the IFS Grantees already receive a salary and are employed by or otherwise attached to a developing country research institution. Grantees may apply for renewal grants. In total, a researcher is eligible to receive three (3) Research grants from IFS.
An eligible candidate for an IFS Research grant is:
a citizen of a developing country
a scientist with at least a Master’s or equivalent degree/research experience
under 40 years of age and at the beginning of research career
attached to a university, national research institution or a research-oriented NGO in a developing country
Exceptions:
China: Chinese applicants must be under 30 years of age.
Researchers from Hong Kong SAR are not eligible for support from IFS.
Researchers from Sub-Saharan Africa are eligible for IFS support up to the age of 45, provided they have completed their highest academic degree (MSc, MA, PhD, Post-Doc or equivalent) in the previous 5 years.
Project proposals are welcome at the IFS Secretariat throughout the year.
For administrative purposes, we have two application deadlines, 30 June and 31 December. However, we urge you not to wait until the deadline – please submit your application at least one month before. Applying earlier in the six-month cycle allows us to contact you for more information if needed.

The BP Conservation Program (BPCP)
Since 1985, the BP Conservation Program (BPCP) has supported and encouraged conservation projects that address global conservation priorities at a local level. The Program aims to contribute to long-term environmental conservation and sustainable development in priority areas by encouraging and engaging potential leaders in biodiversity conservation, and providing opportunities for them to gain practical skills and experience.
To apply for the 2006 Future Conservationist Awards project teams must submit a completed application form in English to the Program Manager by 16th December 2005. Applications submitted more than two weeks before the deadline will be reviewed by program staff, and an opportunity to make small alterations will be allowed.
The criteria have changed for the 2006 awards. Please make sure you read the new criteria and guidelines thoroughly to ensure your project is eligible.
